TradingView indicator · Free

Study when a trend is running out.

Trend Exhaustion combines two money-flow oscillators with the position of the close within the candle. When the reading crosses an extreme band, buying or selling pressure is stretched. It is a study tool, not a buy or sell signal.

  • Free and open source: you copy the code and paste it into TradingView.
  • Works on any TradingView chart, without depending on a broker's platform.
  • It is calculated on the closed candle; alerts only fire once confirmed.

What it measures

Three pieces, one line

  • Fast flow (8 candles)

Compares the volume of the candles that rise against those that fall, on the candle's average price. It reacts quickly to a push.

  • Slow flow (20 candles)

The same idea on the close and with more memory. It filters part of the fast flow's noise.

  • Close position

Where the candle closed within its range, from -1 to +1. A close near the high adds; near the low subtracts.

How to read it

Bands to study, not orders

The default bands are 80 and 20, and they can be changed in the indicator's settings.

  • The line crosses above the 80 band

Buying pressure is stretched. It is a reason to review the chart's structure and context; it does not mean the price will fall.

  • The line crosses below the 20 band

Selling pressure is stretched. Same approach: context first.

  • Between the bands, especially near 50

Neutral zone. The indicator adds little there; it is better not to force readings.

Limits

What the indicator is not

  • It is not a buy or sell signal nor a trading system.
  • It does not predict price: it describes volume pressure that has already happened.
  • In forex, the volume TradingView shows is tick volume and depends on the data provider; results can vary between symbols.
  • An extreme band can persist for a long time in a strong trend. Test it on demo first and note when it worked and when it did not.
