Calculators
The math almost nobody does before entering.
Three calculators to practice risk management: position size, pip value and required margin. Free, no sign-up, in your browser.
Position size
The math that decides how long your capital lasts. First set how much you are willing to lose on this trade and let that determine the size, not the other way around.
- Maximum risk
- USD 10.00
- Suggested size
- 0.05 lots
What you lose if the price hits the stop.
Always round down.
Indicative estimates calculated in your browser. Actual values depend on the instrument, the contract size, your account currency, the account type and the conditions HFM publishes at the time of execution. They do not constitute investment advice.
How to use them
Three rules
Before entering, not after
Size is decided with the stop already placed. If you calculate after opening, it is too late.
Risk comes first
First you set how much you accept to lose (1% or less in the program). The number of lots is the consequence, never the starting point.
Margin is not the risk
A small margin does not make the position small. What you can lose is the notional value times the price move.
Frequently asked questions
What everyone asks
How much should I risk per trade?
In the program we practice with 1% of capital or less. It is not a magic rule: it is the number that lets you get through a normal losing streak and keep learning.
Why does size matter more than the entry?
Because a mediocre entry with good size costs little, and a good entry with excessive size can empty the account. Size is the only thing you fully control.
What is a pip?
The usual smallest unit of movement in a currency pair: 0.0001 in most and 0.01 in pairs with the yen. Its value in money depends on the size of the position and on your account currency.
Is margin what I can lose?
No. Margin is the collateral the broker sets aside. You can lose more than the margin if the price moves against you; that is why the stop loss exists.
Are these calculations exact for my account?
They are indicative. Actual values depend on the instrument, the contract size, your account currency and HFM's conditions at the time of execution. Always check on your platform.
